Finance Operations

Operations
team
Montreal, QC
Full time
Revenue. Expenses. Money in. Money out. While the money train at Transit isn’t an actual train (to our considerable disappointment), our finance operation is a well-oiled machine in its own right. From payroll to invoices, payments to grants, we’ve got 170+ transit agency partners, legions of Royale subscribers, and a globetrotting retinue of employees who could use your help to keep track of each loonie and toonie.
Reporting to Stéphanie (our Head of Finance & Operations), you’ll work closely with the operations team to handle payroll, accounts receivable, and accounts payable. You’ll be surrounded by brilliant and kind colleagues who want to make sustainable transportation a joy to take, and who see the potential for cities to be turned into more beautiful, liveable spaces…
…but beautiful and liveable cities begin with beautiful and liveable spreadsheets! If you’re a sustainability-minded numbers person — and want to make our financial operations run like clockwork — here’s what you’ll handle when you clock in at Transit:
📝 Responsibilities
Payroll
You’ll run our payroll, and lend support on government compliance tasks across Canada, the US and UK
Accounts receivable
You’ll help us prepare invoices for approval, and issue them to customers
You’ll manage clients’ payment reconciliation and follow up on unpaid invoices and payment discrepancies 😤
At the end of each month, you’ll review monthly revenue, make sure all deals have been invoiced, and ferret out any discrepancies
You’ll manage our revenues bookkeeping (month-end closes, journal entries for deferred revenue and accrual, etc.)
You’ll help on sales tax reporting in the US
You’ll support our revenue operations and business teams with various sales, legal, and procurement processes (vendor set-up, payment system set-up, etc.)
Accounts payable
You’ll process payments for all our providers
You’ll approve and reimburse employee expenses in accordance with internal policies
You’ll keep our books in order and chase down missing invoices and receipts, like a chequebook-balancing Indiana Jones
You’ll ensure each invoice is booked in the right category and with the right tax code
You’ll manage salaries and inter-company transaction bookkeeping
You’ll help on grants application and expenses reporting
✅ Requirements
You have 2 years’ experience in accounting, finance or operations, (or perhaps you have a natural knack for them? We’re open to being convinced you’d be great for the job!)
You are very comfortable speaking and writing in both French and English 🗣️🌍 (95% of our customers are outside of Quebec and you will need to interact with them)
You’ve been told “how do you stay so organized?” on many occasions. (Have you given up the secret?)
You’re a detail-oriented kinda person who can remember which of the two different partner agencies named Mountain Line that we’re supposed to invoice
You’re a good communicator and relish having an open line of communication with the whole team
Accounting software doesn’t scare you (aka Quickbooks is an old friend)
Google Sheets doesn’t scare you either
No task is too big or too small: you’re willing to take on tasks outside of your normal day-to-day duties
You are proud to live in the beautifully wacky metropolis of Montreal
💯 Would be nice if
Experience with CRM like Hubspot
You’re passionate about cities, urbanism, public transit, design, software, memeful Slack repartee
Don’t feel like all the requirements apply to you but you still think you’d be a great fit for Transit? Don’t hesitate to apply!
💰 Compensation and benefits
$60,000 - $80,000 CA per year, based on experience
Stock options
Comprehensive medical and dental coverage
5 weeks vacation
Four-day work week at full-time salary (yes, you read that right)
Apple laptop and equipment
$1,600 annual mobility allowance. STM? BIXI? Uber? E-bike? Scooter? Going car-free is free at Transit.
A training and development budget
Generous maternal/paternal/parental leave policy. Gotta fill out our tandem bicycles somehow!
Flexible work hours
Spend your days surrounded by first-rate teammates and the best view of Montreal and/or [insert exotic Zoom background]
When you’re in the office: you’ll be in urbanist heaven, surrounded by Mile End’s urban gardens, bike paths, BIXI docks, bus stops, a metro station, and limitless restaurants… cafés… bars… concert halls… bagel boutiques…
Communal lunch-and-learn with free food in the office each week
👨💻 A note on diversity
Public transit is used by overwhelmingly more women and people of colour than other modes of transportation. We try to make sure the diversity of our users is reflected in the team that serves them. Because when we include people of all races, genders, sexual orientations, ages, and identities — we end up building a better app for everyone who uses Transit.
We encourage candidates of all ages, genders, origins and orientations to apply. If you’d like to specify which pronouns you use, feel free to include that in your application email.
And if your lived experience has given you a unique perspective on all things transportation, mobility, accessibility, urbanism? Let us know, and we’ll make sure your application gets the attention it merits.
📬 How to apply
Send us an email at jobs+finances@transitapp.com with your resume, a quick summary about your relevant experience and why you’re interested in working at Transit. We look forward to meeting you!
PS: When you apply, let us know how you heard about the position! Whispers, grapevines, middle-of-the-night Google searches? We’re dying to know.
PPS: Unfortunately, we don't accept in-person applications or singing telegrams. Make your application sing instead!
