For the last decade, Transit has been proudly bilingual: we translate practically everything from English to French (and vice versa) — you’d expect nothing less from a Montreal company. But why stop at bi-lingual? As Transit’s Portuguese language guardian, you’ll make sure that our Portuguese-speaking users enjoy the app in their tongue, too.
For years we’ve relied on app localization services and the input of our Brazilian employee to make it work, but the time has come: we need our Pessoa. You will ensure our translations and localization works not just for Brazilian ears but for those more accustomed to the Portuguese of the Old World. Someone who can crack jokes, riff on cultural references, someone whose pen spills Douro. Maybe you’re a Portuguese-speaking college student, or a veteran translator who can effortlessly range between dialects, sprinkling americanisms™ into your copy with reckless glee, the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon be damned.
You’ll take over translation responsibilities from our (non-professional translator) Portuguese-speaking teammate to help Transit riders get around their cities without needing a car: from Lisbon to Porto, Montreal’s Little Portugal to the Boston suburbs to Champigny-sur-Marne in France, and beyond. You’ll keep our app copy refreshingly up-to-date, and translate materials into the language of Camões and Saramago.
📝 Responsibilities
This role is a part-time contract position. We anticipate a few hours of work per month, with larger translation projects of 20-40 hours from time-to-time. You won’t be on call, and we’ll give you at least 24 hours notice for any short copy strings that need your help. Obviously we’ll give you much more heads up for longer projects.
In addition to ongoing support, you will have a large one-time project to adapt our current Portuguese app localization from Brazilian Portuguese to Portuguese Portuguese, and to translate part of our website. We anticipate these two projects will take 60-120 hours.
You’ll translate app strings, website pages, standard customer support texts, app update descriptions (and more) from English. You’ll also adapt Brazilian Portuguese content to make sure it works on the other side of the Atlantic. You’ll be essential to making our voice come alive in Portuguese.

Organized and detailed oriented: your writing will be seen by millions of users in dozens of countries
You’re a native (or native-equivalent) Portuguese speaker with solid English chops (and preferably French!)
An artist’s respect for the beauty of Portuguese
Familiar with Transit’s brand voice and can inflect it with different tones depending on the audience
Tech sense (you don’t need to know how to code, but you must be able to explain how Transit works to both uninformed + informed audiences – and be comfortable with various software tools to write your translations)
Familiar with local distinctions in different Portuguese markets – the vocabulary, style, and references should resonate with them!

Experience in communications, ideally in the tech or transportation worlds
You know how to navigate your city without your own car — monkey-branching from bus to bikeshare to scooter to subway to ridehail without batting an eyelash 😉
We’d prefer to hire someone based in Montreal with strong links to the latest in Portuguese pop culture (even though you’ll be doing most of this job on your own time). However, we’re open to the right candidate anywhere in the world, whether it’s in Portugal, Latin America, or the US. There will be some real-time correspondence, and this will occur during EST(ish) business hours.
